About the position

The Database Architect at the Department of Water and Power City of Los Angeles is responsible for performing technical and administrative work related to the development and management of database standards, policies, and procedures. This role involves ensuring the integration, security, and usability of data across both on-premises and cloud-based databases, as well as assisting in the implementation and maintenance of these systems. The Database Architect will also be involved in training, database optimization, and compliance with data privacy regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Develop standards, methods, techniques, policies, and procedures for database management.
  • Assist in the implementation, maintenance, and operation of on-premises and cloud-based databases.
  • Install and configure database software and related administration tools.
  • Develop and implement production scripts for database maintenance tasks.
  • Tune and optimize SQL statements and database/system parameters.
  • Conduct training for users and technical staff.
  • Utilize database tools for backups and recoveries.
  • Ensure database security and compliance with data privacy acts.
  • Research current database issues and technologies.
  • Assist application developers in applying sound database technology to new applications.
  • May supervise other technical employees.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in information systems, software engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or a related field.
  • Two years of full-time paid experience in database management in a medium to large scale production environment using platforms like Oracle, DB2, SQL Server, MySQL, MariaDB, or PostgreSQL.
  • OR two years of experience as a database architect or administrator in the IT industry with similar database platforms.
  • OR two years of experience with Google Cloud Platform or comparable cloud computing platforms in a similar role.

Nice-to-haves

  • DBA professional certification in Oracle, DB2, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, or Google Cloud.
  • Experience with data governance and compliance.
