About the position

The Database Developer will play a crucial role in the development and enhancement of the financial management systems within the FMS suite of applications. This position requires adherence to New York City development standards while creating new components and improving existing functionalities. The developer will be responsible for identifying, reviewing, and analyzing vendor deliverables to ensure they meet essential technical and non-functional requirements, focusing on performance, operability, and maintainability of the application software. In addition to development tasks, the Database Developer will serve as an escalation point for resolving production application issues encountered by users during online operations and by support staff during batch cycle executions. The candidate will also support software testing in non-production environments, providing necessary technical support during batch cycles. This role involves designing and executing technical tests to ensure that vendor and software deliveries effectively address business and technical challenges while adhering to quality standards. The developer will review and provide feedback on functional business designs, assessing their technical feasibility and impact on performance and maintainability. They will support business units by troubleshooting job flow and application execution problems during simulations and production executions of FMS business events. Gathering production operation requirements and incorporating them into the products developed by the team is also a key responsibility. Coordination with the Financial Systems Production Operations Units to implement new software processes into staging and production environments is expected. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills, work independently, and collaborate effectively with other team members, including Operations, Business Unit, and Testing, as directed by the FMS Development Team lead. Mentoring and guiding other team members will also be part of the role.

Responsibilities

  • Develop new components and enhancements to the suite financial management systems in the FMS suite of applications.
  • Identify, review and analyze vendor deliverables to ensure they meet key technical/non-functional requirements.
  • Serve as an escalation point for the resolution of production application issues encountered by users and support staff.
  • Support software testing tracks in non-production application environments by providing batch cycle and technical software support.
  • Design and execute technical tests to ensure vendor and software deliveries address business and technical problems.
  • Review and provide feedback on functional business designs in terms of technical feasibility and impact on performance.
  • Support Business Units by troubleshooting job flow and application execution problems during simulations and production executions.
  • Gather production operation requirements and incorporate them into the products authored by the development team.
  • Coordinate with the Financial Systems Production Operations Units to implement new software processes into staging and production environments.
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to other team members as necessary.

Requirements

  • Experience as a Developer/Architect on at least two full life cycle project iterations.
  • Advanced skills in Oracle structures for processing and performance-based applications.
  • Thorough understanding of advanced SQL and PL/SQL programming techniques.
  • Ability to write and troubleshoot anonymous SQL blocks and stored procedures.
  • Proficient in authoring quality SQL that utilizes Oracle performance features.
  • Proficiency in using and navigating UNIX, including intermediate to advanced Unix commands.
  • Advanced in developing new and modifying existing shell scripts, particularly in Korn Shell coding.
  • Good understanding of standard SDLC methodologies.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Java, JEE

  • Familiarity with Rational Clearquest, Rational Clearcase, BMC Remedy
  • Background in accounting and/or budgeting packages
