About the position

The Database Manager will establish a database solution for managing environmental data from various remediation projects and investigations. This role involves leading the organization, storage, querying, and reporting of data to support multiple environmental projects. The position requires hands-on experience with data transformation, manipulation, validation, warehousing, analysis, and visualization, and demands a detail-oriented, self-motivated individual interested in analytical data management, database programming, or data science.

Responsibilities

  • Designing, building, implementing, and maintaining various types of relational databases, including metadata development and documentation.
  • Working with data from different sources in various formats (i.e. XML, CSV, ASCII, txt, accdb, etc.).
  • Developing client-specific databases, including ERPIMS, FUDSChem, and various state agency databases.
  • Querying, coding, and exporting data to facilitate department functions, such as data analysis and reporting.
  • Analyzing information needs, data relationships, attributes, data flow, storage requirements, and reporting capabilities.
  • Ensuring quality data standards of project deliverables through QA/QC and peer review processes.
  • Learning new applications and integrating them into the data management workflow.
  • Staying updated on hardware/software upgrades, troubleshooting problems, and suggesting improvements for database quality control.
  • Securing the database by developing policies, procedures, and controls, including data entry, QA/QC, and reporting.
  • Supporting staff in producing reports, queries, exports, and coding to facilitate department functions.
  • Providing a positive working environment and building solid relationships with clients and team members.
  • Managing multiple tasks within scope, budget, and schedule expectations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a quantitative subject (engineering, science, computer science, statistics, math, or equivalent).
  • Experience with database structures, design, maintenance, and integrity.
  • Strong working knowledge of quantitative research methods.
  • Strong skills in computer programs, including Microsoft Office suite (particularly Excel and Access).
  • Working knowledge of ArcGIS and geological visualization tools such as EVS, Leapfrog, and gINT.
  • Strong analytical skills in reviewing and assessing data.
  • Ability to pass background checks by various Federal Agencies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with relational database systems: Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Access, MySQL, Oracle, and EarthSoft's EQuIS.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD ERPIMS and/or FUDSChem.
  • Background in chemistry or experience with laboratory analytical databases (LIMS).
  • Experience working with geospatial data through GIS platforms such as ArcGIS or Trimble Business Center.
  • Ability to implement Python onto ArcGIS.
  • Interest and/or experience in GPS data and technology.
  • Experience and knowledge of Alaska Native cultures.
