About the position

Arthur Grand Technologies is currently seeking a highly motivated and skilled Datacenter Technician for one of our clients in Altoona, Iowa. This position is focused on hands-on work in a data center environment, specifically as a Fiber Technician. The role involves a variety of responsibilities including cabling and termination, testing, and splicing of fiber optic cables. The Fiber Technician will be responsible for mounting and installing racks, patch panels, and hardware, as well as performing necessary grounding for racks and equipment. The technician will also conduct continuity tests on horizontal and riser cables, troubleshoot issues such as opens, crosses, shorts, and transpose pairs, and utilize a tone set for effective troubleshooting. In addition to installation and testing, the Fiber Technician will be required to terminate various types of connectors including LC, SC, ST, FC, FDDI, SMA, and MPO/MTP for both multi-mode and single-mode fiber. The role also includes the installation of fan-out kits and the calculation of end-to-end loss budgets in accordance with TIA/EIA standards. Accurate completion of paperwork such as timesheets, material transfers, and work orders is essential. The technician will also be expected to perform mechanical and fusion splicing, including building entrance splices and maintenance space splices. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, professional, and capable of promoting the company culture. They must possess strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills, and be able to communicate effectively with customers and team members. Physical requirements include the ability to work at heights, lift up to 50 pounds, and work in confined spaces. The position may require travel as needed. Candidates should have a high school diploma or GED, and proficiency with the necessary tools and techniques for fiber optic installation and troubleshooting.

Responsibilities

  • Mount and install racks, patch panels, fiber optic and hardware.
  • Install grounding for racks, equipment, and cable as required.
  • Perform continuity tests on horizontal and riser cables.
  • Troubleshoot opens, crosses, shorts, and transpose pairs on horizontal and riser cables.
  • Install various types of connectors for both multi-mode and single-mode fiber.
  • Terminate simplex and duplex jumper cords.
  • Terminate and breakout outside plant fiber.
  • Terminate indoor tight buffered multimode and single-mode fiber.
  • Install fan out kits including buffer tube.
  • Calculate end-to-end loss budgets in accordance with TIA/EIA standards.
  • Complete all paperwork accurately and on time, including timesheets and work orders.
  • Test using OTDR, Fluke, and EFXO.
  • Troubleshoot using OTDR to identify and correct problems end to end and network wide.
  • Perform mechanical and fusion splicing with all types of fiber cable.
  • Perform building entrance splices, maintenance space, and direct buried splices.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Proficient with tools required for fiber optic installation and maintenance.
  • Experience in terminating all connector types and methods for SMF and MMF systems.
  • Experience with testing and troubleshooting MMF and SMF systems using OTDR and PMLS.
  • 3-5 years of experience in fiber optics (preferred).
  • Industry certifications (Corning/FOA) are preferred.
  • Data center installation experience is preferred.
  • Mechanical and fusion splice experience is preferred.
  • OSP / Confined Space Entry experience (splicing) is preferred.
