About the position

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays a crucial role in providing services to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Working as part of an interdisciplinary team, the DSP supports individuals in developing independent living skills and assists with daily living activities. The position emphasizes advocacy, health maintenance, safety, and personal care, ensuring that individuals lead fulfilling lives. DSPs are responsible for maintaining staffing ratios, providing transportation, and adhering to ethical standards in their work.

Responsibilities

  • Assist individuals in achieving desired personal outcomes through advocacy.
  • Support individuals in achieving optimal health, including medication administration and meal planning.
  • Ensure the overall safety of individuals, colleagues, and self by providing continuous care and maintaining a clean environment.
  • Support individuals with personal care needs, including hands-on assistance.
  • Help individuals develop skills to increase independence.
  • Serve as a role model, demonstrating appropriate social interactions and crisis intervention techniques.
  • Complete documentation and safety checks in accordance with regulations and policies.
  • Provide transportation for individuals to various community sites.

Requirements

  • Demonstrate skills outlined in the NYS DSP Core Competencies.
  • Ability to work in a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Complete mandatory trainings within the first 90 days and maintain ongoing recertifications.
  • Communicate effectively in verbal and written forms.
  • Understand regulations and document services in real-time using electronic technology.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize responsibilities.
  • Respond effectively to emergency and crisis situations.
  • Proactively identify and report safety/medical concerns.
  • Ability to accurately count money and complete basic math transactions.
  • Complete training to become an approved medication administration professional (AMAP) and maintain certification.
  • Participate in team and service plan meetings as necessary.
  • Provide person-centered, culturally competent services.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Fluent in American Sign Language.
