About the position

The DBA (Development Support) position at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona involves database administration responsibilities common to all DBAs in the team. The role requires minimal supervision to educate, advise, and support application development teams, ensuring compliance with SQL Server standards. The DBA will promote best practices in SQL Server management, programming, performance tuning, data modeling, design, development, and documentation, aligning with corporate policies and customer requirements. This is a hybrid position, requiring residency in Arizona, with a future start date of January 1, 2025.

Responsibilities

  • Perform database administration and development tasks under general supervision.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure staff to ensure reliable operation of SQL Server databases.
  • Work with stakeholders to define business requirements and resolve systems issues.
  • Support application development teams in designing and deploying applications.
  • Research and resolve production problems and perform security audits.
  • Monitor SQL Server performance and prepare performance reports.
  • Participate in small to medium scoped projects and create priority lists agreed upon by management.
  • Advise application development teams on database design and implementation standards.
  • Evangelize SQL Server best practices and functionality to the user community.
  • Provide peer-level review and mentoring to junior DBAs.

Requirements

  • 5 years of experience in database administration/development with SQL Server.
  • 2 years of experience in advanced database administration/development with SQL Server.
  • 5 years of experience leading a SQL Server database administration/development team.
  • High School Diploma or GED in a general field of study.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems, Business, or related field (preferred).
  • Certifications such as MCITP SQL Server 2005/2008 and MCSE SQL Server 2012 (preferred).

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in advanced database administration/development with SQL Server for 2-8 years (depending on level).
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • Certifications in SQL Server administration and development.
