The Database Administrator (DBA) position in Topeka, Kansas, is a hybrid role that involves assisting in the installation, development, and maintenance of data structures or databases that align with the organization's information architecture and data security requirements. The DBA will work closely with business applications and supporting software and tools to ensure optimal performance and data storage. This role includes conducting feasibility studies related to database development, designing, implementing, and modifying databases as necessary. The DBA will establish procedures for distributing stored or processed data in formats required by users while ensuring appropriate security protections are in place based on the data content and transmission methods. In addition to database management, the DBA will integrate systems through effective database design and will be responsible for developing, executing, or monitoring plans and documentation for installation, acceptance testing, implementation, or data conversion. The role also involves managing data retention, archiving, restoration, and disposal in accordance with user needs and organizational requirements for electronic records management. Periodic testing of data recovery from backups is also a critical responsibility. The DBA will participate in research and resolution of technical issues, providing technical assistance to developers in support of the database and data model. This includes consulting with various stakeholders such as programmer/system analysts, business users, and third-party vendors to address database and application software issues. The DBA will provide software and application support during normal work hours and will also be on-call for application schedules and processes outside of regular hours. Additionally, the DBA will convert or transfer database files or tables from existing storage locations and formats to new ones, developing and testing automated means for these conversions. Collaboration with integrated systems administrators is essential for implementing and maintaining integrations across enterprise business applications, including security and data integrations. The DBA will monitor overall system health and identify performance issues within the Database IT infrastructure, analyzing failures and initiating corrective actions as needed. Establishing optimum values for database parameters and monitoring performance or resource utilization of in-production information systems are key tasks, along with reporting utilization trends and exceptions to target values. The DBA will also be responsible for testing the execution of the Disaster Recovery plan to ensure business continuity and system recovery, coordinating participation from business users. Documentation is a critical aspect of this role, as the DBA will prepare and update software and application documentation as projects and service requests are implemented. This includes developing and documenting technical processes, environmental lifecycles, application infrastructure, security, and testing procedures to adapt to peer and customer environments. The DBA will specify policies and standards for safeguarding applications and ensuring data integrity, accuracy, completeness, and confidentiality. Finally, the DBA will assist in testing information system software and tools, collaborating with development, business, training, and testing units to ensure that software upgrades meet business needs and application availability.
