About the position

The Sr. Regional Design Manager at AWS is responsible for leading project teams to deliver high-quality, globally consistent data center designs across the Americas. This role involves managing design processes, collaborating with various stakeholders, and ensuring projects meet schedule and cost constraints while maintaining quality standards. The position offers an opportunity to influence design direction and improve delivery processes within a diverse and innovative team focused on cloud infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Lead project teams of discipline leads to deliver quality and globally consistent data center designs across Americas within schedule and cost constraints while maintaining a high level of quality.
  • Influence internal stakeholders, internal customers (operations), and external consultants to address program-wide design changes.
  • Manage escalations from the design team and collaborate with procurement, construction, and external consultants.
  • Effectively communicate with AWS Leadership and external project partners, including the creation, tracking & reporting of metrics related to schedule, cost, and quality throughout the lifecycle of the project.
  • Think outside of the box to find innovative solutions prior to and during the construction process to reduce contract change orders without negative impacts on quality or reliability.
  • Drive speed, quality, and simplification by eliminating rework loops, reducing and automating manual work and hand-offs, identifying and implementing best practices across the business, and minimizing process variability through standardization and automation.
  • Create global best practice documentation and facilitate sharing across the globe.
  • Motivate others to achieve impeccable quality in an explosive growth and deadline-driven environment.
  • Travel for site assessments, internal design meetings, construction review, and interfacing with design consultants.

Requirements

  • 6+ years experience managing staff / consultants / vendors
  • 6+ years of design experience in commercial / industrial / other complex technical projects
  • 7+ years of Mission Critical facility design experience
  • 5+ years leading sub-consultants and project teams
  • Bachelor or Master's degree (MBA, Engineering, Architecture, Construction)

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional Engineering/Architecture License
  • 10+ years of experience directly related to data center design, construction, operations, and/or facility maintenance
  • Proficiency in building codes, regulations, and standards including IBC or equivalent
  • Direct experience with design or construction administration of a variety of electrical distribution systems ranging from low voltage to high voltage
  • Functional knowledge of industry standards, environmental codes, building codes and safety standards including International Building Code
  • Direct experience in negotiating with regulatory agencies regarding departures from building code and construction change orders
  • Working Knowledge of Sharepoint, BIM/Revit, Salesforce and Procore
