About the position

The Sr. Regional Design Manager at Amazon Web Services (AWS) will lead the design team responsible for delivering high-quality, globally consistent data center designs across the Americas. This role involves collaboration with various engineering disciplines and external consultants to drive project outcomes, establish design procedures, and improve design delivery. The position offers an opportunity to influence design direction and work within a diverse team focused on innovation in cloud computing.

Responsibilities

  • Lead project teams of discipline leads to deliver quality and globally consistent data center designs across Americas within schedule and cost constraints while maintaining a high level of quality.
  • Influence internal stakeholders, internal customers (operations), and external consultants to address program-wide design changes.
  • Manage escalations from the design team and collaborate with procurement, construction, and external consultants.
  • Identify disciplines impacted in design issues to drive cross-disciplinary design decisions.
  • Understand design development, design change management, permitting, and implementation lifecycle.
  • Utilize project management skills including critical path schedule management, risk management, quality management, and cost management.
  • Manage design consultants including procurement, contracting, deliverable management, and payments.
  • Communicate effectively with AWS Leadership and external project partners, including tracking and reporting metrics related to schedule, cost, and quality throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Find innovative solutions to reduce contract change orders without negative impacts on quality or reliability.
  • Prioritize competing priorities and create robust resolution frameworks when facing ambiguity.
  • Drive speed, quality, and simplification by eliminating rework loops and minimizing process variability through standardization and automation.
  • Create global best practice documentation and facilitate sharing across the globe.
  • Motivate others to achieve impeccable quality in a growth and deadline-driven environment.
  • Travel for site assessments, internal design meetings, construction review, and interfacing with design consultants, with anticipated travel not to exceed 25%.

Requirements

  • 6+ years experience managing staff / consultants / vendors
  • 6+ years of design experience in commercial / industrial / other complex technical projects
  • 7+ years of large scale Mission Critical facility design experience
  • 5+ years leading sub-consultants and project teams
  • Bachelor or Master's degree (MBA, Engineering, Architecture, Construction)

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional Engineering/Architecture License
  • 3+ years of large-scale Data Center facility design experience
  • 10+ years of experience directly related to data center design, construction, operations, and/or facility maintenance
  • Ability to communicate complex technical issues to senior leadership or non-engineers, develop basic business case financial projections and create performance metrics
  • Direct experience in negotiating with regulatory agencies regarding departures from building code and construction change orders
