About the position

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking a Sr. Regional Design Manager to join its design team. In this role, you will be part of a global engineering leadership team that includes highly effective Architects, Structural, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Security, and Control Engineers. AWS self-performs engineering on the majority of its capacity delivery projects, which allows Design Managers to maintain a close connection with project details and drive project outcomes. You will have a significant impact on the design direction and the ability to improve design delivery for an entire region, while also establishing design procedures and protocols for the development of future systems. Responsibilities

  • Lead project teams of discipline leads to deliver quality and globally consistent data center designs across Americas within schedule and cost constraints while maintaining a high level of quality.
  • Influence internal stakeholders, internal customers (operations), and external consultants to address program-wide design changes.
  • Manage escalations from the design team and collaborate with procurement, construction, and external consultants.
  • Effectively communicate with AWS Leadership and external project partners, including the creation, tracking & reporting of metrics related to schedule, cost, and quality throughout the lifecycle of the project.
  • Think outside of the box to find innovative solutions prior to and during the construction process to reduce contract change orders without negative impacts on quality or reliability.
  • Drive speed, quality, and simplification by eliminating rework loops, reducing and automating manual work and hand-offs, identifying and implementing best practices across the business, and minimizing process variability through standardization and automation.
  • Create global best practice documentation and facilitate sharing across the globe.
  • Motivate others to achieve impeccable quality in an explosive growth and deadline-driven environment.
  • Travel for site assessments, internal design meetings, construction review, and interfacing with design consultants.

Requirements

  • 6+ years experience managing staff / consultants / vendors
  • 6+ years of design experience in commercial / industrial / other complex technical projects
  • 7+ years of Mission Critical facility design experience
  • 5+ years leading sub-consultants and project teams
  • Bachelor or Master's degree (MBA, Engineering, Architecture, Construction)

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional Engineering/Architecture License
  • 3+ years of large-scale Data Center facility design experience
  • Direct experience with delivering modular data centers design projects, including procurement and commissioning of facilities
  • 10+ years of experience directly related to data center design, construction, operations, and/or facility maintenance
  • Proficiency in building codes, regulations, and standards including IBC or equivalent
  • Direct experience in negotiating with regulatory agencies regarding departures from building code and construction change orders
  • Direct experience with design or construction administration of a variety of electrical distribution systems ranging from low voltage to high voltage.
