About the position

The DC Hostler at WinCo Foods is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of trailers within the distribution center yard. This role involves ensuring compliance with company policies and safety regulations while providing excellent customer service to both internal and external stakeholders. The Hostler will manage yard operations, perform inspections, and maintain a clean work environment, contributing to the overall efficiency of the distribution center.

Responsibilities

  • Safely and efficiently move trailers from the yard or Truck Return Center into the correct dock door or staging location.
  • Deliver friendly and engaging customer service to internal and external customers by telephone, radio, and in person.
  • Model friendly, enthusiastic customer service with an emphasis on taking care of customers.
  • Demonstrate understanding of Hostler responsibilities in the event of an evacuation of the DC.
  • Manage the yard effectively, including designated areas for trailers needing service and pre-cooling perishable trailers.
  • Comply with the DC Food Safety Plan and ensure trailer doors are closed when not in use.
  • Conduct weekly inventory of spill kits and report shortages to the DC Maintenance Manager.
  • Observe and report any violations of WinCo yard policies to DC Supervision.
  • Monitor reefer settings for loads staged in the yard or at the dock.
  • Ensure fuel levels in perishable trailers are adequate before docking for outbound loads.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the tractor according to FMCSR and company standards.
  • Wash and fuel the tractor and trailer in preparation for the next use.
  • Complete a Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) documenting any issues.
  • Ensure loads are secure and travel-ready, including verification of freight and reefer temperature.
  • Weigh outbound loads on a scale prior to travel to ensure compliance with weight specifications.
  • Submit a trailer list to Dispatch and DC Supervision and update as required.
  • Monitor the fuel island to prevent unauthorized transitions by common carriers.
  • Work with Dispatch to identify trailers for backhauls and utilize the wash rack for cleaning trailers.
  • Assist third-party vendors in identifying trailers or tractors needing cleaning.
  • Maintain a clean, neat, and orderly work area.

Requirements

  • 3 years of experience in a grocery store or similar environment.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and work independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain necessary licensing and certification for operating a tractor/trailer combination.
  • Ability to work various shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays in a 24/7 operation.
  • Ability to occasionally move pallets up to 3,500 lbs. with a manual pallet jack.
  • Physical ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop, twist, and turn throughout a shift.
  • Ability to lift, stack, and maneuver objects weighing up to 50-100 lbs. occasionally.
