About the position

The Special Education Teacher at McKinley Elementary is responsible for providing specialized instruction and support to students with disabilities, ensuring compliance with Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and fostering an inclusive learning environment. This role involves collaboration with regular education staff, participation in eligibility meetings, and maintaining accurate records of student progress and assessments.

Responsibilities

  • Perform applicable job functions of a Classroom Teacher.
  • Initiate/Participate in categorical eligibility meetings as an expert in a category of IDEA-BPL 101-746.
  • Ensure that each child has a current IEP (Individual Education Plan) with the required signatures.
  • Monitor the implementation of IEPs.
  • Review and write IEPs on an annual basis.
  • Create and maintain a working special education file in a locked cabinet that contains teacher assessments, current IEPs, psychological evaluations, and pertinent medical information.
  • Provide the building principal with advice on special education issues.
  • Provide staff with in-service sessions each year as required by district policies and state/federal regulations.
  • Collaborate, consult, schedule, and instruct regular education staff regarding classroom inclusion, intervention, and/or modification techniques.
  • Provide for the physical, social, and educational needs of the students.
  • Inform appropriate staff of necessary medical and other information.
  • Assist the student in taking any prescribed medication(s).
  • Lift and/or move non-ambulatory students.
  • Diapers and toilets students age three to adult.
  • Adapt foods and assist in feeding students.
  • Present a professional appearance appropriate to teaching the assignment.
  • Display a well-rounded knowledge and understanding of multicultural issues.
  • Perform teaching and reporting requirements identified as part of state and federally funded programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by your supervisor.

Requirements

  • Current Oklahoma Certificate as a Special Education Teacher.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Special Education or meets the state requirement.
  • Knowledge of English language structure and content.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics and computations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with multicultural education and diverse learning needs.
  • Familiarity with state and federal special education regulations.
