About the position

The Dean of Arts and Sciences at the University of Hawai'i Maui College serves as a key member of the Chancellor's leadership team, providing academic and administrative leadership for various instructional departments. This role involves overseeing curriculum development, faculty management, and ensuring the quality of education and student outcomes. The Dean is responsible for strategic planning, resource allocation, and fostering community relationships to enhance the college's mission.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate Department Chairs in developing academic goals and initiatives.
  • Provide leadership in faculty recruitment, development, evaluation, and retention.
  • Oversee the administration and integrity of transfer and general education curricula.
  • Lead the development of new courses and academic programs in alignment with the college's strategic plan.
  • Direct accreditation self-study and program reviews for assigned departments.
  • Manage operational resources and represent departmental needs to other administrators.
  • Coordinate policy reviews and ensure compliance with regulations and policies.
  • Respond to faculty complaints and adjudicate disputes within established guidelines.
  • Assess financial needs of academic programs and develop budgetary plans.
  • Secure funding and resources for academic initiatives.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree or equivalent from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Experience in higher education involving teaching, counseling, or academic support responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of community college philosophy and contemporary challenges facing community colleges.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work with various constituents in a college environment.
  • Proficiency in computer applications relevant to the position.

Nice-to-haves

  • Doctorate (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Experience in administrative responsibilities with an emphasis on education or public administration.
  • Demonstrated excellence in academic leadership or achievement in teaching or service.
  • Experience in accreditation processes and operational planning.
