About the position

Freire Charter High School is seeking a dedicated individual to fill the dual role of Dean of Culture and Athletic Director for the 2024-2025 school year. This position is integral to fostering a positive and inclusive school environment while also overseeing a comprehensive athletic program that aligns with the school's mission and values. As a member of the culture team, the Dean of Culture will implement strategies to support student behavior, promote social-emotional learning, and cultivate a sense of belonging and respect among all members of the school community. The Athletic Director will be responsible for coordinating all logistics related to practices, games, and tournaments, ensuring that student-athletes maintain academic success while participating in sports, and promoting sportsmanship and teamwork among students, coaches, and spectators. The Dean of Culture will work closely with school leadership to maintain safety and order within the school, build relationships with students, and facilitate restorative conversations to de-escalate crisis situations. This role requires a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with students, parents, and staff. The successful candidate will be a visible presence in the school, accessible to students during various school activities, and will maintain student databases related to climate and discipline. In addition to these responsibilities, the Athletic Director will oversee budgetary considerations for the athletic department, ensuring fiscally responsible decisions are made. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, the ability to motivate and inspire both coaches and student-athletes, and a thorough knowledge of the rules and regulations governing high school athletics. This position requires a willingness to work evenings and weekends as necessary to support the athletic schedule, making it essential for the candidate to be organized and manage their time effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and manage all logistics related to practices, games, and tournaments, including transportation and facility usage.
  • Collaborate with school administration, teachers, and parents to ensure that student-athletes maintain academic success while participating in sports.
  • Implement and enforce policies and procedures related to athletic eligibility, behavior, and safety.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, parents, and the broader community to enhance support for the athletic program.
  • Oversee budgetary considerations for the athletic department and make fiscally responsible decisions.
  • Promote sportsmanship, teamwork, and respect among student-athletes, coaches, and spectators.
  • Work with school leadership and culture team to foster a positive school culture that supports the academic and social-emotional success of each student.
  • Maintain safety and order and build relationships with students by being accessible and visible in hallways, classrooms, arrival/dismissal, lunch periods, and after school programs.
  • Facilitate restorative conversations between members of the school community and de-escalate students crisis situations.
  • Openly and regularly communicate with staff and parents/guardians regarding student behavior.
  • Maintain student databases with climate/discipline information.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Previous experience in athletic administration, coaching, or related roles.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and inspire coaches and student-athletes.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations governing high school athletics.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within the athletic program.
