The Death Investigator I position at Baldwin County Commission involves conducting investigations into various types of deaths, including homicides, suicides, and accidental deaths. The role requires traveling to death scenes, performing examinations, collecting evidence, and collaborating with law enforcement and other agencies to determine the cause and manner of death. This entry-level position demands a strong understanding of death investigation protocols and the ability to handle sensitive situations with professionalism and care.

Responsibilities

  • Travel to the scene of deaths as required by the Coroner's office.
  • Conduct systematic scene investigations to determine the cause and manner of death.
  • Take custody of remains and perform initial examinations on-site.
  • Collect body fluids for toxicology testing as needed.
  • Conduct joint investigations with law enforcement and other agencies.
  • Prepare reports on death investigations ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Conduct follow-up investigations as assigned.
  • Establish the identity of the deceased and notify next of kin.
  • Assist with the removal of remains to funeral homes or morgues.
  • Provide evidence/testimony at court hearings when required.
  • Address community groups about the functions of the office.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 20 years old and insurable by the County's insurance carrier.
  • Pass a criminal and motor vehicle background check.
  • Pass a pre-employment drug test and physical examination.
  • Basic computer skills for data entry and using Microsoft Word.
  • Knowledge of death investigation protocols and legal requirements.
  • Ability to understand medical/forensic information and terminology.
  • Ability to write technical reports and communicate effectively.

  • Knowledge of cameras and photographic procedures.
  • Skills in identifying traumatic wounds and analyzing physical conditions.
  • Ability to maintain emotional stability in stressful situations.
