About the position

Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a Decarbonization Modeling and Analysis Research Scientist to join our Decision Sciences department. This position is integral to our mission of advancing energy solutions and will report directly to the department lead. The successful candidate will be part of a diverse team that operates on a 9x80 schedule, allowing for every other Friday off, and is based at our REC facility in Idaho Falls, Idaho. There are opportunities for remote or hybrid work arrangements, providing flexibility in the work environment. In this role, you will engage in a variety of modeling tools and approaches that span bioenergy, supply chain resilience, and manufacturing. Your primary focus will be on supporting the development of both current and new projects at INL, utilizing advanced computational methods such as discrete event simulation, optimization, system dynamics, and agent-based modeling. You will also be responsible for the development and deployment of high-performance computing solutions, analysis tools, web-based software, and database interfaces to enhance model platforms and frameworks for collaboration with both internal and external partners. Additionally, you will play a key role in supporting INL leadership in meeting Department of Energy (DOE) and industry expectations, milestones, and internal reporting requirements. The ideal candidate will be a core member of our interdisciplinary research and development team, demonstrating a passion for transforming the energy landscape. A proven track record of successfully completing research activities within budget and on schedule is essential. You will be expected to contribute to the scientific reputation of the team through significant contributions to presentations, reports, peer-reviewed journal articles, invention disclosures, and external engagements. Furthermore, you will be tasked with providing innovative, comprehensive, and practical solutions to a wide array of complex and ambiguous challenges, often performing as a Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-PI on projects that require originality and ingenuity.

Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively as a core member of an interdisciplinary research and development team.
  • Contribute to the scientific eminence of the team through presentations, reports, and peer-reviewed articles.
  • Support the development of current and new projects utilizing computational approaches.
  • Provide imaginative and thorough solutions to complex problems.
  • Perform as a Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-PI on projects requiring originality and ingenuity.
  • Engage in external collaborations and contribute to the laboratory's mission in energy research.

Requirements

  • PhD in Engineering Economics, Forest Economics, Resource Economics, Systems Engineering, Operations Research, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Science/Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Business or a related field.
  • Two years of related experience in a relevant field.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working environment.
  • Strong track record of accomplishing research activities within cost and schedule.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with high-performance computing solutions.
  • Familiarity with discrete event simulation and optimization techniques.
  • Background in bioenergy or supply chain resilience.
