About the position

The Deck Engineer Machinist is a Civil Service Mariner (CIVMAR) employed by the Navy to serve the Military Sealift Command (MSC) onboard naval auxiliaries and hybrid-manned warships worldwide. This role is crucial for maintaining, repairing, and operating various deck machinery and equipment, ensuring operational readiness in both peace and wartime scenarios. The position requires proficiency in machine shop equipment and adherence to safety and quality standards while performing essential functions related to maritime operations.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, repair, and operate deck machinery and Underway Replenishment (UNREP) machinery.
  • Handle material handling equipment including hydraulic systems and cargo fluid systems.
  • Operate internal combustion engines and various cargo handling equipment such as cranes and winches.
  • Perform quality assurance on work done by shipyard or shore-side repair personnel.
  • Participate in fire, boat, and damage control drills as required.

Requirements

  • Must be a United States citizen of at least 18 years of age.
  • Possess a U.S. Passport with a minimum of seven months remaining until expiration.
  • Hold a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) and/or Department of Defense (DOD) Common Access Card (CAC) with a minimum of ten months remaining until expiration.
  • Have a United States Coast Guard (USCG) Merchant Mariner's Credential (MMC) with a minimum of ten months remaining until expiration.
  • MMC endorsed as Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED) Deck Engineer or equivalent.
  • At least 6 months of sea experience related to a Deck Engineer Machinist or relevant engineering field experience.

  • Average annual salary of $111,267 plus a $10,548 bonus.
