About the position

The Deck Engineer Machinist is a Civil Service Mariner employed by the Navy to serve the Military Sealift Command (MSC) onboard naval auxiliaries and hybrid-manned warships worldwide. This role is crucial for maintaining, repairing, and operating various deck machinery and equipment, ensuring operational readiness in both peace and wartime scenarios. The position requires proficiency in mechanical systems and the ability to perform quality assurance on repair work, contributing to the overall mission of supporting military operations globally.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, repair, and operate deck machinery and Underway Replenishment (UNREP) machinery.
  • Handle material handling equipment including hydraulic systems, cargo fluid systems, and internal combustion engines.
  • Assist in quality assurance on work done by shipyard or shore-side repair personnel.
  • Perform fire, boat, and damage control drills as required.
  • Take initiative to perform emergency drills as needed.

Requirements

  • Must be a United States citizen of at least 18 years of age.
  • Possess a U.S. Passport with a minimum of seven months remaining until expiration.
  • Hold a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) and/or Department of Defense (DOD) Common Access Card (CAC) with a minimum of ten months remaining until expiration.
  • Have a United States Coast Guard (USCG) Merchant Mariner's Credential (MMC) with a minimum of ten months remaining until expiration.
  • MMC endorsed as Qualified Member of the Engine Department (QMED) Deck Engineer, QMED Machinist, or QMED Pumpman/Machinist.
  • At least 6 months of sea experience related to a Deck Engineer Machinist or 6 months of work experience in an engineering field.
  • STCW Certificate endorsed as Rating Forming Part of an Engineering Watch (RFPEW). Able Seafarer Engine.
