About the position

The Deck Manager at YMCA of Greater Houston is responsible for leading, instructing, and motivating participants in swimming lessons while ensuring a safe and positive environment. This part-time role involves supervising swim instructors, conducting swim lessons, and maintaining compliance with YMCA standards and policies. The Deck Manager plays a crucial role in promoting member safety, youth development, and healthy living, while also engaging with parents and addressing their concerns.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure leadership, instruction, and motivation for participants in swimming lessons.
  • Create a safe and positive atmosphere promoting member safety and engagement.
  • Supervise swim instructors and ensure they meet essential job functions.
  • Conduct swim lessons as needed in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Prepare for the first day of swim sessions by communicating with parents and planning class layouts.
  • Oversee skill tests to divide classes appropriately.
  • Observe lessons to ensure effective teaching techniques are used by instructors.
  • Create and model positive parent and participant experiences through engagement and communication.
  • Hold instructors accountable for providing a positive student experience and constructive feedback.
  • Address parent concerns and communicate with the Aquatics Director as needed.
  • Distribute participant surveys and address concerns with instructors and the Director.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance and progress as required by YMCA standards.
  • Perform daily equipment checks and report any damaged equipment.
  • Assist and attend all staff meetings and trainings as required.
  • Coordinate private swim lesson requests and scheduling.
  • Monitor registration and work with the Aquatics Director to schedule instructors and manage classes.
  • Report suspicious behaviors and policy violations.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 18 years and at least 5 years older than the oldest participant.
  • Demonstrate Swim Instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Current or must obtain certifications in CPR, First Aid, and Child Abuse Prevention Training before the first instructional shift.
  • At least one year of teaching experience required, preferably in swim lessons.
  • Ability to instruct and provide feedback on stroke development techniques.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people.

Nice-to-haves

  • YMCA Swim lesson experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of current program design.
