About the position

The USA TODAY Network is seeking an editor to lead our Deep South Connect team, which is dedicated to delivering timely and relevant news content across various platforms. This role is pivotal in utilizing search trends, social tools, and metrics programs to identify stories that resonate with our audiences in Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi. The editor will oversee a team of reporters, guiding them in the creation of diverse content formats that engage our readers and drive audience growth. The content produced by this team will be featured across Gannett's publications, including The Savannah Morning News, Montgomery Advertiser, and The Clarion-Ledger. In this position, the editor will be responsible for managing the editorial process, ensuring that news is delivered quickly, clearly, and accurately through various channels such as stories, videos, newsletters, and social media platforms. The role requires a strong focus on audience engagement, with the editor expected to interpret metrics and measure the impact of content against newsroom goals. The ideal candidate will possess a keen news judgment, enabling them to identify immediate and influential stories while juggling a high volume of content production. The editor will also be tasked with developing coverage plans for significant news events, holidays, and anniversaries, ensuring that the team is prepared to capitalize on these opportunities. This position demands initiative, accuracy, and the ability to work collaboratively with teammates across the state, all while maintaining a focus on digital optimization, including headlines, SEO, and multimedia assets.

Responsibilities

  • Manages a team of reporters to quickly, clearly and accurately deliver news via stories, video, newsletters, and social media.
  • Edits content and provides coaching to reporters.
  • Uses metrics to inform story choices and shape beat strategies.
  • Identifies top trending stories of the day based on analytics and audience potential.
  • Demonstrates fast and sound news judgment on an ongoing basis.
  • Helps develop coverage plans around big news events, holidays, anniversaries, and other opportunities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in communications, journalism, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Management experience is a plus.
  • Experience using metrics to make coverage decisions.
  • Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment, post-offer background check.
