About the position

The Defect Engineer position at Ultium Cells focuses on improving particle contamination control in the manufacturing process to achieve zero defects. This role involves managing cleanliness, analyzing particle specifications, and implementing strategies to enhance product quality in a high-technology battery cell manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure and maintain cleanliness of all production processes
  • Manage particle contamination when bringing in new equipment
  • Control inflow of particles caused by operator movement
  • Regularly manage and improve clean quality
  • Review and inspect particle specifications of new equipment
  • Check particle levels in CDA/N2 pipes connected with equipment
  • Enhance the Defect Source Map (DSM) to reduce low-voltage defects caused by particles
  • Survey and improve DSM points by analyzing particles and identifying phenomena
  • Deploy particle improvement specifications extensively
  • Respond to internal and external issues related to particle contamination
  • Conduct regular measurements of elimination units based on the DSM
  • Perform microscope analysis of particles found
  • Improve non-conformities in production or equipment
  • Collect nonconformity information and monitor progress for long-term improvement
  • Share best practices with team members
  • Train team members on DSM and critical points
  • Revise particle and DSM common specifications and apply global best practices
  • Inspect completed manufacturing equipment
  • Confirm application status of specifications verification
  • Inspect equipment before mass production to ensure 100% application confirmation
  • Implement particle elimination strategies such as air blowers and suction units
  • Implement adhesion prevention measures like covering and sticky mats
  • Collect and analyze particle composition
  • Build a Particle Defect Source Map (DSM) library
  • Develop particle management standards and processes
  • Monitor and manage particle levels
  • Optimize blowing and suction conditions using Computational Fluid Dynamics
  • Conduct periodic DSM monitoring

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Engineering (Chemical/Industrial/Mechanical/Electric/etc.)
  • 0 - 3 years' experience in Engineering or Quality roles in an industrial environment, preferred
  • Ability to find improvement ideas for yield in components and inspections
  • Positive and dedicated attitude with effectiveness in achieving goals
  • Willingness to work flexible hours occasionally
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Open-mindedness
  • Drive effective problem solving and support team implementation of solutions
  • Knowledge of performance measures and applicable standards
  • Ability to prepare meaningful reports on work performed and conclusions
  • Ability to obtain, understand, and apply relevant information
