About the position

The Defense Counsel position at the Oklahoma Indigent Defense System (OIDS) involves providing legal representation to indigent clients in state court across various case types, including felony, misdemeanor, juvenile delinquency, traffic, and wildlife cases. The role emphasizes competent legal advice and zealous advocacy throughout the criminal trial process, ensuring clients are informed and supported at every stage.

Responsibilities

  • Represent indigent individuals in state court at the trial level.
  • Perform case management activities during the direct appeal process in the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals.
  • Communicate with clients regarding all aspects of their cases, including plea negotiations and post-judgment proceedings.
  • Engage with clients' friends and family to gather pertinent information while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Conduct independent investigations related to clients' cases, including guilt or innocence and potential sentences.
  • Collect and maintain evidence acquired through investigations according to established standards and laws.
  • Prepare for trial by filing pretrial motions and developing plea negotiation strategies with client input.
  • Conduct ongoing legal research to identify new issues and prepare arguments for motions.
  • Prepare for jury selection by developing questions and challenges for potential jurors.
  • Preserve legal errors for appellate review on applicable grounds.
  • Serve as Co-Counsel as assigned and provide support to other attorneys and staff.
  • Perform administrative duties as requested.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school.
  • Active membership and good standing with the State Bar of Oklahoma, or eligibility for admission.
  • Scheduled to take the Oklahoma Bar Exam.
