About the position

The Demand Planner at Walgreens is responsible for the development of demand plans for assigned categories, ensuring accurate forecasts for replenishment, promotional sales, and one-time buys. This role requires a deep understanding of demand dynamics for specific categories and items, as well as the ability to recognize trends and patterns to adjust forecasts using statistical modeling techniques and qualitative data. The Demand Planner is also accountable for purchasing within their assigned categories and collaborates closely with supply planners to track Purchase Order execution and the distribution of inventory from distribution centers (DCs) to stores. The position plays a critical role in supporting the company's long-term strategy and inventory reduction efforts while maintaining high customer service level metrics. In this role, the Demand Planner develops initial forecast modeling based on historical data and evaluates the impact of promotional strategies on forecasts. They must understand the dynamics of their assigned categories, including seasonality, competitive activity, and sales objectives. The Demand Planner creates merchant-facing forecasts and collaborates with merchandising through the Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) process. They also provide input into the S&OP supply planning process and work with vendors and Category Managers to determine clones for new item forecasts. The Demand Planner is accountable for maintaining in-stock levels, inventory value, and Days of Supply (DOS) for their categories. They aggregate and incorporate incremental sales impacts from promotional events into macro forecasts and review merchandising plans with category managers to agree on forecast numbers. Daily meetings with supply planners are essential to discuss key inventory issues and focus areas. The role requires identifying and resolving out-of-stock issues and working with vendors to ensure a world-class customer experience. Overall, the Demand Planner is a vital part of the supply chain team, ensuring that inventory levels are optimized to meet customer demand while minimizing costs.

Responsibilities

  • Develop initial forecast modeling based on historical data and causal factors.
  • Evaluate the impact of promotional strategy on the forecast and make recommendations to meet margin and profit goals.
  • Understand the dynamics of assigned categories and items, including seasonality, competitive activity, trends, and sales objectives.
  • Create merchant-facing forecasts at the Category, Ops Study, and BU level and collaborate with merchandising via S&OP process.
  • Provide input into S&OP supply planning process and collaborate with DC and Transportation.
  • Evaluate the consumption plan and financial plan to make recommendations to business stakeholders.
  • Work with vendors and Category Managers to determine clones for new item forecasts.
  • Create supply chain facing sales forecasts at the vendor and DC level.
  • Make purchases for assigned categories and track Purchase Order execution and distribution of inventory.
  • Accountable for in-stock levels, Inventory $, and DOS for related categories.
  • Aggregate and incorporate incremental sales impact of promotional events into macro forecasts by Division / Ops Study.
  • Review merchandising plans for designated categories and meet with category managers to present and agree on forecast numbers.
  • Meet daily with supply planners to discuss key in-stock and inventory issues.
  • Identify and resolve out-of-stock issues through data analysis and review of safety stock levels.
  • Work with vendor base to resolve chronic issues using vendor scorecards.
  • Collaborate with Category Supply Planner to ensure proper stock levels and allocation for promotional and seasonal items.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and at least 2 years of experience in retail/wholesale planning OR a High School Diploma / GED and at least 4 years of experience in retail/wholesale planning.
  • Experience in negotiating operational aspects of business and understanding their impact on the overall company.
  • Knowledge of inventory management practices and definitions, such as safety stock and carrying cost.
  • Experience in statistical modeling techniques and concepts of forecasting such as MAPE and BIAS.
  • Experience using time and project management skills to prioritize and track multiple projects.
  • Experience identifying operational issues and implementing strategies to resolve them.
  • Experience analyzing data to perform Root Cause Analysis and Cost-Benefit Analysis.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's Degree in Supply Chain or MBA.
  • Supply Chain/Logistics Certification - P.Log, CSCMP or APICS.
  • Previous experience in an S&OP environment.
