About the position

The Dental Assistant (Expanded Function) position at the Indian Health Service in Madison Heights, VA, is responsible for providing chair-side assistance to dentists in various dental treatments, including restorative, prosthodontic, oral surgery, endodontic, pediatric, and periodontal care. The role involves maintaining a clean and organized dental environment, assisting with patient care, and performing expanded functions such as routine prophylaxis and restorative procedures. This position is crucial for ensuring high-quality dental services in a community health setting.

Responsibilities

  • Perform chairside assistance in restorative, prosthodontic, oral surgery, endodontic, pediatric, and periodontal treatment.
  • Greet and receive patients, maintain equipment, and prepare the dental mobile unit and department.
  • Assist and record medical history of patients and schedule them for treatment.
  • Expose, process, and mount intra and extra-oral radiographs.
  • Provide routine prophylaxis and topical fluoride treatments, and perform complex oral prophylaxis.
  • Instruct patients in preventive dental care and demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques.
  • Maintain supply levels and cleanliness of the dental station, sterilize instruments, and record examination and treatment information.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
  • Completion of a dental assistant or dental hygiene program with relevant coursework.
  • 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in dental assistance or completion of a full 4-year course of study in a dental assistant program.
  • Completion of training specifically designed for expanded functions in dental assisting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with children under the age of 4.
  • Ability to educate patients on post-operative pain management and infection control.
  • Experience in monitoring dental patients.
