About the position

The position involves planning and directing a preventive dental health program within a correctional facility, ensuring the delivery of oral health care to patients. The role emphasizes maintaining security while providing therapeutic and preventive dental procedures, including oral prophylaxis and preparation for periodontal surgery. The incumbent is expected to foster a humane environment and contribute to the successful reentry of individuals into the community.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and direct the preventive dental health program.
  • Instruct patients in oral health care and administer oral prophylaxis.
  • Perform complete oral prophylaxis including supragingival and subgingival scaling.
  • Polish teeth with abrasive pastes and rubber cups, and apply topical fluoride treatments.
  • Provide therapeutic and preventive procedures for patients with periodontal disease.
  • Prepare patients for periodontal surgery by performing deep scaling and root planning therapy.
  • Maintain security of the institution as part of correctional responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Must be currently licensed to practice as a dental hygienist in a State or territory of the United States or the District of Columbia.
  • Must have completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards for administering radiologic procedures and be certified as a radiographer.
  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in federal service.
