About the position

The position of Dental Officer at a Bureau of Prisons federal correctional facility involves providing comprehensive dental care to the inmate population. The role requires utilizing technical skills and professional judgment to diagnose and treat complex dental issues while maintaining the security of the institution. The Dental Officer is responsible for coordinating the dental program, ensuring quality control, and assisting in the production of dental prosthetics, all while adhering to the standards set by relevant dental authorities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a full range of dental services to the inmate population.
  • Diagnose and treat difficult dental problems in a correctional environment.
  • Assist in the coordination of the dental program and propose modifications to operating procedures.
  • Establish and maintain quality control measures in accordance with dental standards.
  • Direct and coordinate the production of finished prosthetic appliances.
  • Maintain security of the institution as part of correctional responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from an accredited institution.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a U.S. jurisdiction.
  • One or more years of experience performing professional dentistry work at the GS-12 level or above.
  • Completion of a 3-year residency program in dentistry or equivalent experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience diagnosing and treating unusual dental problems.
  • Experience providing dental therapeutics for infection and pain management.
  • Experience conducting comprehensive emergency care and treatment planning.
