About the position

The Dentist position at the Pueblo of San Felipe is a community-based role focused on providing comprehensive dental care to residents, particularly American Indians and Alaska Natives. The dentist will perform a variety of dental procedures, coordinate health department activities, and engage in community education regarding oral health. This role also involves supervising dental staff and managing dental program initiatives to ensure quality care and compliance with health regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform clinical and radiographic examinations of oral hard and soft tissues.
  • Diagnose oral pathology and provide restorative, endodontic, prosthodontic, periodontic, pedodontic, oral surgery, and preventive orthodontic services.
  • Coordinate Dental Health Department activities in accordance with tribal administration and funding requirements.
  • Provide direct care services to eligible patients at the San Felipe Health Clinic.
  • Advise clinic staff and tribal administration on oral health matters.
  • Refer patients to authorized dental facilities when necessary.
  • Participate in community education programs about dental health practices.
  • Supervise dental auxiliaries and manage their performance and leave.
  • Coordinate with temporary dental staff for coverage during absences.
  • Maintain contracts with professional services and participate in dental policy development.
  • Oversee inventory management of dental supplies.
  • Assist with third-party billing activities and Medicaid requirements.
  • Develop monthly work plans and reports in compliance with health service requirements.
  • Participate in the development of health department goals and objectives.
  • Provide education on oral health in community settings.
  • Develop new dental health programs and revise existing policies as needed.
  • Act as a liaison between the Pueblo and various health organizations.
  • Attend health department and clinic staff meetings.
  • Conduct quality assurance and performance improvement audits for the dental program.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in dental medicine (D.M.D) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from an accredited institution.
  • Valid New Mexico Dental License.
  • Basic understanding of public health principles and health education.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with statistical data development and analysis.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software and the Indian Health Service RPMS computer system.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in community health education and promotion.
  • Familiarity with cultural requirements in health education programs.
