About the position

The Deputy Assistant U.S. Trade Representative (DAUSTR) serves as a principal expert and senior advisor on trade negotiations and initiatives within the Office of Economic Affairs and Innovation and Intellectual Property. This role involves coordinating U.S. trade policy, leading delegations to international trade negotiations, and preparing strategies for consultations with foreign governments. The DAUSTR is responsible for conducting economic analyses, developing reports, and representing USTR in discussions with foreign officials.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the principal expert and senior advisor on trade negotiations and initiatives.
  • Coordinate U.S. trade policy in assigned areas.
  • Lead or participate in U.S. delegations to international trade negotiations and conferences.
  • Prepare positions and strategies for consultations and negotiations with foreign governments.
  • Conduct economic analytical studies and develop reports and recommendations for U.S. policy positions.
  • Prepare Congressional testimony and briefing materials for the U.S. Trade Representative.
  • Explain and defend the Administration's trade policies to various stakeholders.
  • Represent USTR in contact with foreign government officials.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Must be able to obtain and hold a Top-Secret security clearance.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private sector.
  • Experience serving as a principal expert or senior advisor on trade negotiations or initiatives.
  • Experience leading U.S. delegations to international trade negotiations or conferences.
  • Experience explaining or defending trade policies to foreign governments and Congress.
  • Experience planning and conducting economic or legal/policy analysis regarding international trade issues.

Nice-to-haves

  • Mastery level experience involving intellectual property or economic analysis in connection with international trade agreements.
