About the position

The Deputy Athletic Director serves as the Chief Operating Officer for UAH Athletics, providing high-level administrative leadership to the entire UAH Athletics Department. This role requires a highly communicative individual driven by excellence, possessing a robust set of leadership characteristics. The Deputy Athletic Director must work effectively in a team environment and demonstrate a high level of organizational capacity, personnel development, integrity, perseverance, initiative, customer service focus, and solution-mindedness. This position is integral to the department's senior leadership team, focusing on essential operations and serving as a critical thought partner and decision-maker within the department. In the absence of the Director, the Deputy AD will oversee the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, ensuring continuity and effective management of the department's functions. The Deputy Athletic Director will work a Monday-Friday schedule, with frequent and irregular hours associated with events. This individual is expected to represent UAH professionally, aligning with the University of Alabama in Huntsville's overall strategy and culture. The role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, including assisting the Director of Athletics in management and supervision, overseeing staff in various functional areas, and providing leadership to intercollegiate athletics functions such as human resources, facility operations, and business operations. The Deputy AD will also collaborate with campus partners and represent the University at various meetings, ensuring effective communication and coordination across departments.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the Director of Athletics in the overall management, supervision, and leadership of the department.
  • Serves as second in command and oversees the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics in the absence of the Director.
  • Oversees and provides direct supervision of staff in Athletics departmental functional areas, including Head Coaches of assigned sports and office administrative support employees.
  • Provides oversight and leadership to assigned primary intercollegiate athletics functions, including human resources, facility operations, business operations, and risk management.
  • Works closely with the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics in the preparation, management, and maintenance of department and program budgets to ensure sustainability and stability in compliance with University policy and procedures.
  • Serves as the Department Head of External Operations.
  • Advises the Director on long-range/strategic planning initiatives, departmental policies/procedures development and execution, resource planning, allocation, and management, and personnel matters within the department.
  • Partners with various campus partners including Academic Affairs, Admissions, and Financial Aid as well as internal and external constituents.
  • Represents the University at appropriate Conference, NCAA, and university meetings.
  • Oversees all related special projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and years of experience.
  • Eight or more years of related experience or equivalent combination of pertinent education, training, and experience.
  • Five or more years of professional experience in an intercollegiate/professional athletics department context.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with multiple interests in a collegiate, civic, or private business setting.
  • Excellent oral, collaborative, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of intercollegiate athletic programs, rules, and regulations.
  • Demonstrable effective organizational skills are required.
  • Willingness and ability to travel.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including nights and weekends.
  • Valid driver's license with the ability to be insured to drive college vehicles.

Nice-to-haves

  • Graduate degree in Sports Administration, Business Administration, or a health-related field is preferred.
  • Rich experience in strategic planning processes is desired.
  • Experience as a senior-level athletic administrator at an NCAA institution is preferred.
