About the position

The Deputy Building Official will assist the Building Official in overseeing construction services, including permitting, inspection, and the public permit center, while supervising Building Division staff. This role is integral to ensuring compliance with building codes and ordinances, and it involves a collaborative approach to serve the San Mateo community effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the administration of the Building Division, including assigning and supervising staff.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to technical and office staff.
  • Perform complex plan check inspections and enforcement work related to compliance with building codes.
  • Develop methods and procedures for efficient operation of permit applications and inspections.
  • Supervise inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial construction for compliance with codes.
  • Review and resolve complex plan review and inspection issues.
  • Provide technical information regarding codes to contractors and the public.
  • Prepare reports and correspondence on code compliance matters.
  • Compile and maintain statistics on inspection activities.
  • Assist in budget preparation and administration of the division budget.
  • Serve as acting Building Official when assigned.

Requirements

  • Five years of increasingly responsible experience in plan check and/or inspection of construction, with supervisory experience.
  • Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in structural, mechanical architecture, or a related field is preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Building Official Certificate from ICC or equivalent association.
  • Experience working in a municipal setting, especially in a leadership capacity.
  • Supervisory experience.
