About the position

The Deputy Chief of Staff to the Borough Commissioner plays a crucial role in managing the operations of the Brooklyn Borough Commissioner's Office. This position involves supervising staff, coordinating capital projects, and serving as a liaison to various governmental agencies. The Deputy Chief of Staff is responsible for synthesizing policy ideas, assisting in fundraising initiatives, and representing the Commissioner in meetings and events.

Responsibilities

  • Manage difficult and responsible professional work under the direction of the Commissioner.
  • Supervise the day-to-day operations of the Brooklyn Borough Commissioner's Office.
  • Serve as liaison to City Hall and other agencies, overseeing projects on behalf of the Commissioner.
  • Work with all divisions within the Agency to solicit and synthesize policy ideas.
  • Coordinate and manage the borough's capital projects, including needs assessments and long-range planning.
  • Assist in private fundraising and other funding initiatives, including coordinating grants.
  • Assist with community outreach, program preparation, and event planning.
  • Schedule and carry out special events, including ground breakings and award ceremonies.
  • Oversee correspondence and permits office.
  • Conduct research and prepare correspondence, presentations, and reports for the Commissioner.
  • Accompany the Commissioner to internal and external meetings and represent them as needed.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community-centered activities; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community-centered activities; or
  • Equivalent education and/or experience to the above, with at least one year of experience as described.

  • Thorough understanding of the capital system.
  • Experience handling sensitive and confidential matters.
  • Ability to anticipate and respond to unexpected or difficult situations.
  • Proven track record of working autonomously and taking direction when needed.
  • Effective delegation and management skills.
  • Strong familiarity with New York City government and the Parks Department.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
  • Valid New York State driver license.
