About the position

The Deputy Chief of Staff to the Borough Commissioner plays a crucial role in managing the operations of the Queens Borough Commissioner's Office. This position involves supervising staff, coordinating capital projects, and serving as a liaison with various governmental agencies. The role requires strong leadership, organizational skills, and the ability to handle sensitive matters while supporting the Commissioner in various capacities.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise the day-to-day operations of the Queens Borough Commissioner's Office.
  • Serve as liaison to City Hall and other agencies, overseeing projects on behalf of the Commissioner.
  • Work with all divisions within the Agency to solicit and synthesize policy ideas.
  • Coordinate and manage the borough's capital projects, including conducting needs assessments and organizing meetings.
  • Conduct research and prepare correspondence, presentations, reports, and briefing documents for the Commissioner.
  • Accompany the Commissioner to internal and external meetings.
  • Represent the Commissioner at Agency and external meetings.
  • Develop borough capital needs list and organize scope and site meetings for community groups.
  • Assist in planning and executing press events such as ribbon-cuttings and ceremonies.
  • Coordinate special projects as directed by the Borough Commissioner and Chief of Staff.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or related activities; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or related activities; or
  • Equivalent education and/or experience to the above, with at least one year of experience as described.

  • Thorough understanding of the capital system.
  • Experience handling sensitive and confidential matters.
  • Ability to anticipate and respond to unexpected situations.
  • Proven track record of working autonomously and taking direction when needed.
  • Effective delegation and management skills.
  • Strong familiarity with New York City government and the Parks Department.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
  • Valid New York State driver license.
