About the position

The Deputy Chief Technology Officer (Deputy CTO) plays a crucial role in shaping the Laboratory's technology development strategy, working closely with the CTO. This position involves managing internal R&D investments and promoting innovative research across various mission areas, ensuring alignment with national security needs and strategic sponsors.

Responsibilities

  • Develop long-range, Laboratory-wide technology road maps and investment strategies.
  • Support strategic leadership of the Laboratory's annual Department of Defense-funded internal research and development investments.
  • Spearhead specific technology projects, studies, and evaluations based on strategic directions.
  • Lead alignment of plans, policies, processes, and resources for achieving the Laboratory's strategic technology vision.
  • Represent the Laboratory in interactions with external sponsors, research partners, and collaborators.

Requirements

  • Masters or PhD in relevant STEM disciplines with a distinguished record of technical or scientific achievements.
  • Minimum of 12 years working in a technology field, with at least 8 years in progressively responsible leadership roles.
  • Experience in assessing technology trends and developing technology strategy in a diverse R&D organization.
  • Demonstrated program development and execution experience, including aligning technical concepts with mission needs.
  • Research experience and project leadership in an R&D environment; line management experience preferred.
  • Knowledge in advanced materials, microelectronics, computing hardware/software, optical systems, RF systems, cyber systems, AI, decision systems, autonomous systems, and biotechnology.

  • Experience working cross-disciplinary programs across several technology areas.
  • Ability to apply knowledge strategically to identify cross-domain opportunities and challenges.
