About the position

The Deputy City Attorney for the Workers' Compensation Team at the San Francisco City Attorney's Office is responsible for litigating the City's workers' compensation claims and advising various City departments on related legal matters. This role requires expertise in workers' compensation law, including trial experience and the ability to navigate complex legal issues. The position is part of a collaborative team that engages in extensive legal work, including discovery, negotiation, and representation in administrative proceedings.

Responsibilities

  • Litigate and defend the City against all workers' compensation claims filed by employees.
  • Advise claims adjusters on general questions under state laws governing workers' compensation issues.
  • Conduct extensive discovery and depositions of injured workers and physicians.
  • Rate and analyze medical reports and recommend settlements to claims adjusters.
  • Advise City departments on developing workers' compensation issues, including legislative changes and legal developments.
  • Handle all subrogation matters on behalf of the City when a City employee is injured on the job by a negligent third party.

Requirements

  • Licensed to practice law in California.
  • Five or more years of legal experience, particularly in workers' compensation law.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and advocacy skills.
  • Ability to draft and review legal documents such as Petitions, Points and Authorities, and Appeals.
  • Strong judgment and ability to manage an active workload.
