About the position

The Deputy Clerk position at the Newport News General District Court is a critical role within a high-volume office environment, responsible for a variety of docketing and operational tasks. This position requires the individual to ensure that court instructions are executed accurately and that legal documents are prepared in compliance with established policies. The Deputy Clerk will assist judges, attorneys, and all parties involved in cases, providing support both over the phone and in person with professionalism and courtesy. The role demands a high level of organization and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, especially under tight deadlines. Key duties include preparing detailed court documents according to established guidelines, entering data into an automated case management system, scheduling court matters, preparing correspondence, and filing court documents. The Deputy Clerk will also be responsible for daily docket preparation and may serve as a courtroom clerk. Additional responsibilities encompass answering phone calls, assisting customers at the counter, processing fines and costs, collecting payments, scanning documents, and handling mail and correspondence. The ability to multitask and adapt to additional responsibilities as assigned by management is essential for success in this role.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Detail-oriented with data-entry experience.
  • Organized and able to multitask effectively.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of office automation systems and computer software.

Nice-to-haves

  • Court experience preferred.
  • Experience handling money preferred.
