About the position

The Deputy Clerk - Opinions Specialist position at the Court of Appeals of Virginia Clerk's Office is a full-time role responsible for the finalization and release of the Court's opinions and dispositional orders, as well as the processing of all related filings. This position plays a crucial role in ensuring that legal documents are accurately prepared and disseminated to litigants and other stakeholders. The Deputy Clerk will work closely with various deputy clerks and will be tasked with reviewing and finalizing opinions and orders for electronic and paper release. The role may also involve telework, subject to the discretion of the Senior Dispositions Deputy Clerk and Clerk. Key responsibilities include proofreading correspondence prepared by the Clerk's Assistant, preparing payment notices and orders for counsel, and managing mandates for cases decided by opinion. The Deputy Clerk will also handle inquiries regarding dispositional orders and opinions, prepare memos for panel rulings on motions or cost questions, and ensure that all correspondence related to bills of costs is accurately prepared. This position requires a high level of attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage a high volume of work under time constraints. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in legal proofreading and editing, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office applications. The role demands reliability, conscientiousness, and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks effectively. The Deputy Clerk will also be expected to perform other duties as assigned by the Clerk, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the Clerk's Office.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews and finalizes opinions and dispositional orders for release electronically and/or in paper form to litigants and others.
  • Reviews the work of various deputy clerks.
  • Proofreads correspondence prepared by the Clerk's Assistant.
  • Prepares payment notices and orders for counsel.
  • Prepares mandates in all cases decided by opinion, tracks mandates for certification, and prepares all correspondence related to mandates.
  • Prepares any correspondence related to bills of costs, reviews bills of cost and/or any objections, and prepares orders to accompany the mandate an itemized statement of costs.
  • Prepares memos to the panel for rulings on any motions or cost questions.
  • Prepares orders for cases in which the Supreme Court reverses or amends any order or opinion of this Court.
  • Prepares orders for payment of guardians ad litem.
  • Handles inquiries regarding any dispositional orders and opinions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Clerk.

Requirements

  • Applicants must possess a four-year degree.
  • Applicants that possess a JD must have at least 5 years experience; those without a JD must have eight to ten years of experience working in a circuit court or appellate court.
  • Experience proofreading and editing legal opinions is preferred.
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook, Adobe, and related computer programs is required.
  • Experience dealing with a high volume of work under time constraints is necessary.
  • Ability to multi-task and work well with colleagues and the public.
