About the position

The Deputy Commissioner for Customer and Employer Services / Chief Operating Officer at the Virginia Employment Commission is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing various operational areas including Administrative Law, Unemployment Insurance, Customer Contact Center Operations, and Central Records. This position involves strategic direction, budget management, compliance oversight, and collaboration with executive team members to ensure effective service delivery and operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Provide executive direction and guidance to Administrative Law, Unemployment Insurance, Customer Contact Center Operations, and Central Records.
  • Direct the preparation, execution, monitoring, and adjustment of division budgets.
  • Supervise professional staff and manage complex programs, ensuring compliance with agency, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Collaborate with the Commissioner and other Deputy Commissioners to meet business needs and communicate effectively.
  • Represent the agency in interactions with government executives, elected officials, and other stakeholders, making formal presentations as needed.

Requirements

  • Comprehensive knowledge of management principles and practices, including strategic planning and resource allocation.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage in a geographically dispersed organization.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills, along with leadership and decision-making abilities.
  • Experience with budget management and fiscal responsibility in public-sector workforce services.

Nice-to-haves

  • Education or training in business/public administration or a similar field.
  • Experience with complex Unemployment Insurance programs and managing professional staff.
  • Experience in customer contact center operations and related automated systems.
  • Experience in an executive level position within a governmental setting.
