About the position

The Deputy Coroner plays a crucial role in the investigation of sudden and unexpected deaths within Northampton County. Under the direction of the Coroner and Chief Deputy Coroner, this position involves traveling to death scenes, conducting investigations, and collaborating with law enforcement and other agencies to determine the cause and manner of death. The Deputy Coroner is required to maintain a minimum of 24 hours of work per month to retain employment status.

Responsibilities

  • Travel to the scene of unattended deaths within Northampton County.
  • Conduct systematic scene investigations to determine the cause and manner of death.
  • Take custody of remains and perform initial examinations on-site.
  • Collect biological specimens for toxicology testing as required.
  • Conduct joint investigations with law enforcement and other agencies.
  • Prepare reports on death investigations ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Establish the identity of the deceased and notify the legal next of kin.
  • Assist with the removal of remains to funeral directors or forensic facilities.
  • Provide testimony at criminal or civil hearings as needed.

Requirements

  • Completion of a Bachelor's degree in Forensic Science, Criminal Justice, Biological Science, Anthropology, Nursing/Medicine, or Chemistry; OR an Associate's degree in a related field with at least two years of relevant experience; OR a high school diploma with four years of relevant experience.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Completion of the Pennsylvania State Coroner's Education Board basic education course within six months of appointment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in medicolegal death investigation, nursing, or investigative police work.
  • Knowledge of forensic science and death investigation protocols.
