About the position

The Deputy County Counsel position involves providing high-quality legal services to various County departments, agencies, and elected officials. The role requires strong research, writing, and critical thinking skills, with responsibilities including advising clients, representing the County in court, and collaborating in a fast-paced environment. The position is available at multiple levels (I, II, III, IV), each with increasing complexity and responsibility.

Responsibilities

• Provide professional legal services and representation to County departments and jurisdictions.
• Advise and represent County departments, commissions, and special districts in legal matters.
• Research, draft, and present legal documents including opinions, briefs, and court orders.
• Represent the County in litigation and prepare necessary legal documents.
• Provide legal advice on general liability and tax-related claims.
• Train County departments on legal issues and responsibilities.
• Review contracts for compliance with legal standards.
• Attend Board of Supervisors meetings and represent the County as needed.
• Negotiate with outside parties regarding claims and property transactions.
• Stay updated on trends in municipal law and apply relevant legal principles.

Requirements

• Possession of a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school.
• Active membership in the State Bar of California.
• Valid California driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
• Experience in a legal office or environment is preferred.
