About the position

The District Attorney's Office is seeking candidates for the position of Deputy District Attorney (DDA) at three levels: DDA I, DDA II, and DDA III. Each level involves different responsibilities and requirements. The DDA I performs entry-level legal work, focusing on misdemeanor and major traffic offenses. The DDA II handles felony criminal cases, while the DDA III takes on advanced responsibilities, including supervision of other attorneys and handling both felony and misdemeanor cases. Responsibilities

  • Ensures orderly prosecution, disposition and processing of misdemeanor and traffic cases assigned (DDA I).
  • Prepares and tries cases involving misdemeanor and petty offense; reviews investigative reports; files charges; requests and reviews additional information; writes charging documents, warrants, pleadings, plea agreements, briefs and related materials; negotiates plea agreements; appears in court; presents testimony and arguments in hearings including preliminary, motions, pleas and sentencing (DDA I).
  • Confers and advises law enforcement officers concerning charges and investigations and criminal law (DDA I, DDA II, DDA III).
  • Confers with defense attorneys (DDA I, DDA II, DDA III).
  • Handles appeals of misdemeanor convictions to District Court (DDA I).
  • Represents Department of Motor Vehicle in administrative appeals to District Court (DDA I).
  • Explains and interprets statutes and status of various cases to the general public, and determines the adequacy of complaints presented by the public (DDA I, DDA II, DDA III).
  • Interviews and prepares victims and witnesses (DDA I, DDA II, DDA III).
  • Covers court appearances for other attorneys (DDA I, DDA II, DDA III).
  • Performs other duties as appropriate or necessary for performance of the job (DDA I, DDA II, DDA III).
  • Exercises direct, first-level supervision of positions, employees, operations and activities (DDA III).
  • Coordinates staff training, assigns and reviews work, participates in the interview and selection process, makes recommendations impacting pay, status and disciplinary action, evaluates performance, and approves time off (DDA III).
  • Processes/reviews additional reports and filings (DDA III).
  • Advises and monitors less experienced attorneys in the office (DDA III).
  • Provides training and mentoring inside and outside of the office (DDA III).

Requirements

  • Law degree from an accredited law school required (DDA I, DDA II, DDA III).
  • No experience required for DDA I; minimum of one year experience preferred (DDA I).
  • Minimum of two years experience required for DDA II (DDA II).
  • Minimum of three years experience required for DDA III (DDA III).
  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Colorado and must be in good standing required (DDA I, DDA II, DDA III).
  • Must successfully pass background check (DDA I, DDA II, DDA III).
