About the position

The Deputy Fire Chief (Supervisory) at NIST is responsible for directing emergency responses, overseeing fire prevention programs, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. This role involves significant leadership responsibilities, including acting as a liaison with local fire services and managing training and drills. The position requires a strong background in fire protection and emergency medical services, along with the ability to supervise and coordinate activities in high-pressure situations.

Responsibilities

• Directs response to emergency medical, fire, and hazardous materials calls.
• Oversees practice drills and building inspections.
• Maintains equipment and ensures readiness for emergency situations.
• Acts as the liaison training officer between the NIST Fire Protection Group and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue.
• Assists the Fire Chief in developing and maintaining a comprehensive fire prevention and protection program.

Requirements

• One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level, including operating the Incident Command System.
• Understanding of fire/hazard protection and prevention principles and practices.
• Experience in planning, managing, and implementing fire/hazard protection programs.
• Valid certifications: Firefighter 2, Maryland Emergency Medical Technician - B, Hazmat operations, and Class B Driver's License or equivalent.
