About the position

The Deputy General Counsel (General Counsel V) position at the Office of the Governor involves performing advanced legal work, providing legal services to the Governor and his staff on various legal issues, and overseeing the agency's legal activities. The position is integral to the agency's strategic planning and administration, ensuring compliance with legal standards and providing counsel on legal risks and solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Provide well-researched legal services for the Governor and his staff on a wide range of legal issues.
  • Direct the agency's legal activities and oversee day-to-day legal services and operations.
  • Interpret laws, regulations, and rules, and prepare legal documents.
  • Render legal advice and counsel to the Governor and agency management.
  • Consult with attorneys and oversee the drafting and negotiation of contracts.
  • Oversee the drafting and review of bills for legislative consideration.
  • Advise on policy matters and identify appropriate legal solutions to legal risks.
  • Coordinate with the Offices of the Attorney General regarding litigation and other legal matters.
  • Communicate effectively with members of the Texas Legislature and other stakeholders.
  • Participate in the agency's strategic planning process.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited law school and current member of the bar in good standing.
  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Texas for six (6) years or licensed in another state for six (6) years with the ability to secure licensure in Texas.
  • Ability to research, analyze, and solve legal problems and interpret laws and regulations.
