About the position

The mission of the California Labor Commissioner's Office is to ensure a just day's pay in every workplace in the State and to promote economic justice through robust enforcement of labor laws. By combating wage theft, protecting workers from retaliation, and educating the public, we put earned wages into workers' pockets and help level the playing field for law-abiding employers. The Licensing and Registration Unit administers exams, issues and renews permits, licenses, certifications, and registrations to industries including: Agricultural, Entertainment, Garment, Car Wash and Electrician Certification. Licensing and Registration Unit's Vision: Provides California employers with the highest quality assistance in obtaining their licenses and registrations in the most expeditious manner. Our knowledgeable staff promote economic justice by providing dependable service with a highly functional and well-designed on-line system to level the playing field for law-abiding employers. We utilize the registration requirements to ensure compliance with all labor laws in licensed industries. We enforce the law by setting a standard of fair and expeditious resolution of claims to achieve long-term compliance from the employers of the State of California. By providing education and meaningful enforcement of wage and hour laws, we combat wage theft and ensure that wages earned are put into the pockets of the workers. Under supervision of a Deputy Labor Commissioner III, in the State Labor Commissioner's Office of the Licensing and Registration program, the Deputy Labor Commissioner I (DLC I) is responsible for the investigation and enforcement of the licensing requirements as mandated by the California Labor Code and California Code of Regulations. The DLC I works in partnership with other government entities and units to ensure compliance with registration requirements.

Requirements

  • Must be reachable on an employment list, have transfer eligibility or have reinstatement eligibility.
  • Experience working with diverse and/or underserved communities.
  • Customer service experience providing information and assistance to the public.
  • Experience with public speaking to groups.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and terminology of labor relations work.
  • Understanding of labor and employment conditions and trends in California.
  • Ability to analyze Labor Code and Regulations to enforce retaliation statutes.
  • Good judgment and creative problem-solving skills.
