About the position

The Sacramento Bee is seeking a deputy politics editor to lead the California Capitol Bureau, focusing on political coverage in California, the largest state and fifth-largest economy in the world. This role involves guiding reporters, contributing original reporting, and ensuring comprehensive coverage of significant political issues, including housing, climate change, and social justice. The deputy politics editor will play a crucial role in shaping impactful journalism that holds elected officials accountable.

Responsibilities

• Work closely with the California politics editor to set coverage priorities and develop new strategies for journalism delivery.
• Ensure the team delivers a strong mix of breaking news, accountability journalism, and features on California politics and policies.
• Coach reporters on skills such as source development, audience-first journalism, and investigative reporting.
• Edit a range of stories, from breaking news to deep enterprise pieces and newsletters.
• Contribute original reporting that is impactful and of high interest.

Requirements

• Experience working with a team of ambitious reporters, demonstrating commitment to breaking news and enterprise.
• Strong management and organizational skills with a hands-on approach to editing.
• Excellent reporting, writing, and sourcing skills.
• Experience with public records requests.
• Ability to thrive in a demanding, fast-paced, and constantly evolving job environment.
• Meticulous news judgment and commitment to nonpartisan, ethical reporting.
• Knowledge of California politics, legislative procedures, and campaign coverage experience.
• At least five years of editing or reporting experience.
