About The Position

The Kings County Probation Department is seeking Deputy Probation Officers to conduct investigations, prepare recommendations for the courts, and supervise probationers. This role is essential in ensuring justice, rehabilitation, and safety for individuals on probation, requiring a high standard of ethics and integrity. The position is available at two levels: Deputy Probation Officer I, an entry-level role, and Deputy Probation Officer II, a journey-level role with more responsibilities and independence.

Requirements

• Possession of a valid California driver's license.
• Bachelor's degree in psychology, sociology, criminal justice, or a closely related field.
• For Deputy Probation Officer II: One year of experience performing probation work at a level equivalent to Deputy Probation Officer I.

• Knowledge of evidence-based practices in probation and rehabilitation.

Responsibilities

• Conduct investigations and prepare recommendations for the courts in probation cases involving adults or juveniles.
• Supervise and counsel probationers, ensuring adherence to conditions of probation.
• Interview probationers and families to assess criminal and social history, risks, and needs.
• Develop and implement case plans based on probationers' history and needs.
• Prepare various court reports including assessments, case plans, and legal documents.
• Make presentations and testify in court regarding sentencing recommendations and probation violations.
• Coordinate and monitor participation in treatment and rehabilitation programs.
• Intervene in crisis situations and provide counseling to individuals and families.
• Work closely with schools, courts, community agencies, and law enforcement.
• Transport probationers to custodial facilities and court hearings.
