About the position

The Deputy Sheriff position at the Marin County Sheriff's Office is designed for lateral applicants, academy graduates, or current academy attendees. This role encompasses a variety of responsibilities across patrol, custody, court, and investigation divisions, providing law enforcement services to unincorporated communities and rural areas throughout Marin County. Deputies are tasked with processing, guarding, transporting, and supervising prisoners, as well as ensuring security in courtrooms. For those attending the Deputy Sheriff Academy, they will initially be appointed at the Deputy Sheriff Trainee level. Upon successful completion of the POST Academy and the Marin County Sheriff's Field Training Program, Jail Operations Program, or the Court Floor Operations Training Program, they will be promoted to Deputy Sheriff and compensated accordingly. Responsibilities

  • Provide law enforcement services in unincorporated communities and rural areas of Marin County.
  • Process, guard, transport, and supervise prisoners.
  • Provide security for courtrooms and related facilities.
  • Participate in patrol, custody, court, and investigation divisions.
  • Complete required training programs and maintain certifications.

Requirements

  • High School graduation or equivalent (GED) is required.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Lateral applicants must have one year of current, full-time, paid patrol experience in a California police or sheriff's department or similar agency.
  • Successful completion of the California Commission on Peace Officers' Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Regular Basic Course is required for lateral applicants.
  • Possession of a California Commission on P.O.S.T. Basic certification is required for lateral applicants.
  • Academy graduates must possess a valid California P.O.S.T. Basic Course Certificate or equivalent certification.
  • Current attendance at a California P.O.S.T. Basic Academy is required for academy attendees.

Nice-to-haves

  • College level coursework in law enforcement, criminal justice, criminology, or a related field is highly desirable.
