About the position

The Deputy Sheriff II is responsible for law enforcement, crime prevention, patrol of assigned areas, and enforcement of State and Local laws. Deputy Sheriffs do not rotate into the jail. The position is located in Napa County, which is home to 140,000 residents and is part of California's wine region. The County is dedicated to improving the lives of its citizens and reflects values such as Respect, Accountability, Dedication, Integrity, and Innovation. The recruitment process includes application review, oral panel interviews, and agility testing as required. The Deputy Sheriff has various responsibilities including patrol, investigations, court security, and civil duties.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol assigned areas and answer calls for protection of life and property.
  • Conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations of criminal incidents.
  • Direct traffic and detain drivers violating laws.
  • Issue citations and make arrests as necessary.
  • Investigate major crimes against property and persons.
  • Gather evidence and conduct surveillance.
  • Present information to the District Attorney's office for filing of charges.
  • Maintain safety and security in the courtroom and serve as bailiff.
  • Serve legal papers and warrants, and prepare necessary files and reports.

Requirements

  • One year of professional experience in law enforcement work as a paid, full-time Peace Officer in California.
  • Possession of a valid Basic Certificate issued by the California Peace Officers' Standards and Training Commission.
  • Equivalent to completion of high school; two years of college is highly desired.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
  • Must be 21 years of age and a United States citizen.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in law enforcement outside of California with proof of enrollment in the CA POST Basic Requalification Course.
  • Bilingual skills for additional pay premium.
