About the position

Under supervision, and in a temporary/intermittent capacity, performs law enforcement duties to protect life and property and to preserve law and order, and performs related work as required. This class is a temporary/intermittent journey level class in the Deputy Sheriff series. Incumbents perform the full range of duties including patrol, community oriented policing, crime prevention, crime investigations, supervision and control of inmates, court services, or specialized activities such as training, burglary prevention, and community liaison, depending on the assignment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform law enforcement duties to protect life and property.
  • Preserve law and order.
  • Conduct patrols and community-oriented policing activities.
  • Engage in crime prevention and crime investigations.
  • Supervise and control inmates in detention facilities.
  • Provide court services and specialized activities as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or satisfactory completion of an acceptable General Education Development (GED) test.
  • Possession of a State of California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Basic Certificate, or satisfactory completion of a POST Basic Academy, or current enrollment in a POST Basic Academy.
  • Ability to read and understand departmental policies, rules, instructions, laws and ordinances.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret legal codes and criminal evidence.
  • Ability to recognize criminal activity and identify potential dangers to life and property.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from various socio-economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and county codes and ordinances relating to law enforcement.
  • Knowledge of modern principles and procedures of law enforcement work.
  • Knowledge of court and evidence procedures.
  • Knowledge of public and private community resources and programs.

Benefits

  • Salary range A: $7,706.46 - $9,364.67/month
  • Salary range B: $10,325.16/month
  • Temporary/intermittent position with no probationary period.
