About the position

The Deputy Sheriff position at Baldwin County Sheriff's Office is a full-time role focused on ensuring public safety, deterring criminal activity, and enforcing laws and regulations. The role involves a variety of law enforcement functions including patrol, investigations, and court services, while maintaining positive community relations and responding to emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Enforces all applicable codes, ordinances, laws and regulations to protect life and property.
  • Prevents and discovers the commission of crime; apprehends, arrests and processes criminals, fugitives and offenders.
  • Patrols assigned area and watches for suspicious activity.
  • Responds to calls relayed by dispatchers, including domestic disputes, assaults, burglaries, and traffic accidents.
  • Conducts preliminary investigations; interviews victims, complainants and witnesses, gathers information and evidence, and secures crime scenes.
  • Inspects premises of residential and commercial buildings to detect suspicious conditions.
  • Attends court; testifies in judicial proceedings and attends bond hearings.
  • Creates and maintains positive public relations with the general public.
  • Performs various court-related functions as assigned, including serving warrants and performing court security functions.
  • Provides assistance and backup support to other deputies as necessary.
  • Contacts and cooperates with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the investigation of crimes and the apprehension of offenders.
  • Assists local fire departments and emergency medical technicians.
  • Inspects and maintains assigned patrol vehicle, uniform, issued equipment, and weapons.
  • Communicates effectively and coherently over law enforcement radio channels.
  • Prepares reports, logs, citations, forms and other documentation; maintains files, logs and records.
  • Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Must pass a criminal background check and pre-employment drug screen.
  • Must be APOSTC certified or have an Associate's degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • Experience in law enforcement or related field for at least 2 years.
  • Strong time management skills and ability to handle multiple tasks.
