About the position

The Deputy Sheriff position involves performing general police work to maintain public safety through the enforcement of State and County laws. The role includes a variety of duties related to the operation of the jail and the security of inmates, requiring independent judgment and initiative in emergency situations.

Responsibilities

  • Patrols an assigned area enforcing the laws of the county and all pertinent local, State and Federal Ordinances.
  • Investigates accidents and other crimes, preparing reports and collaborating with investigators.
  • Provides first aid and assistance, including calling wreckers and ambulances for accident victims.
  • Issues citations and warnings as necessary.
  • Observes and checks businesses and properties for unlocked doors or signs of criminal activity.
  • Makes arrests and apprehends suspects when required.
  • Testifies in court regarding investigations and arrests.
  • Investigates citizen complaints related to suspected criminal activity, stray animals, and domestic disturbances.
  • Inspects and maintains vehicle and equipment, operating Breathalyzer as assigned.
  • Directs and escorts traffic as needed.
  • Investigates break-ins, trespass, and prowler complaints, taking corrective action as necessary.
  • Performs duties of a Jailer or Radio Dispatcher as assigned, including booking and photographing prisoners.
  • Maintains accurate records of individuals held in the jail and ensures their care and custody.
  • Supervises the serving of meals to prisoners and escorts them to medical appointments.
  • Accepts bonds posted at the Sheriff’s Department during their shift and supervises trustee work details.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of law enforcement.
  • Knowledge of the laws and ordinances governing local law enforcement.
  • Knowledge of County roads and geography.
  • Skill in the use of firearms.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with department personnel and the public.
  • Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written directions.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise reports and maintain records.
  • Knowledge of institutional management practices and the care and custody of prisoners.
  • Ability to handle and control prisoners.
  • Completion of job-related courses in jail management or equivalent training and experience.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued by the State of Wisconsin.
  • Good physical condition.
